My name is Julie (obviously) and I’ve been knitting since January 2005, and spinning since July 2006. I puffy heart most fiber related things, though you will never catch me free-forming (fug!), weaving (no allure), or processing my own spinning fiber (ewwww). I’m not your average knitter, as I own no cats (nor do I have any desire to) and I’m actually quite conservative. (Oops! Did I just say that out loud?)
When I’m not knitting or spinning, I’m taking care of my fam, cooking, eating, fixing computer stuff, dinking with web sites, and learning to work with WordPress, because Blogger has done me wrong. Bastards.

I have just received a calendar with these very cool cable hats (without the flaps, but I’m going to try those next) and I’m so old that I need to know what size needles you suggest I use and the gauge. I don’t see it in the paper pattern on the calendar or the one on your site. Could you enlighten me?
Thanks so much!

The pattern calls for US8 (5.0 mm) needles for the newborn size, or US3 (3.0 mm) needles for the preemie size. As noted in the pattern here on my site, there is no suggested gauge…I tend to be pretty loose when it comes to gauge on tiny baby things. 😀

Thanks for my daughter’s snowboarding earflap hat pattern (the video was helpful for this first time knitter). I tried switching to DPNs when the hat got too small for the circular needles but stiches seemed to be fused to the DPN so tight that I can’t get another needle into it (chopstick hat, anyone?). How can I finish this hat? Also, do I sew polatec inside the flaps and a rim of about 2 inches inside it like the ones I see at REI?

Oh help…all I wanted was to print out the directions for the cap, and instead am printing out 29 pages of comments. Is there any way you can have the directions separated from the comments? I know I could have canceled the printing process, but left the room for a minute after starting and didn’t realize that I would get so many pages. Can’t wait to make the hat…

Julie, I was looking through the lands end catalog (for kids) and in it is a lined ear flap hat that is really cute. Therefore I went on line looking for earflap hats for toddlers. Found yours and it really is cute.
If you have the time to go on line to lands end and take a look at their striped earflap hat for toddlers (HG59529 – style #) – maybe you can tell me how to make the earflaps look more like the ones in the catalog. I’m sure it has to do with just starting to widen the earflap much sooner than in your current patter. But I am not talented enough to do this. Any idea?
Thanks, Chrys

Chrys, I can’t seem to find the one you are talking about…searching on that item # doesn’t yield anything, and I looked through the entire hat section and didn’t see and striped earflap hats.
If you’re not already a member of ravelry.com, I urge you to join — I am positive that you can find what you’re looking for (and then some!!) there.

Julie,
If you’d just go to ll bean kids, then to toddlers, then to outerwear and then hats.
Called Warm-Up Striped hat.
I’d really appreciate it and you probably would be able to whip up the pattern in no time. (you’d even be able to sell it – it’s really cute!)
Thank you!

Hi Julie – I want to knit an ear flap hat for my great grandson. I found one that I like very much on your web site – it is a blue/white verigated with seed stitch earflaps and a few rows of seed stitch around the base of the hat. The rest is ss.
I didn’t see a pattern or size needles.
HELP??
Thanks

Please – I’m trying to knit your cap for a friend who’s having chemo treatment right now, and I’m missing something:
Row 1: purl.
Row 2: *yo, k1, sk2p, k1, yo, k1* (repeat around).
Row 3: knit.
Row 4: *k1, yo, sk2p, yo, k2* (repeat around).
Row 5: Knit.
Repeat rows 2-5 two times.
Row 14: Knit.
Continue knitting all rounds until piece measures 5 (5, 5.5) inches from bottom.
I understand row 2, but row 4 only gives me 5 stitches… Unless yo means yarn over AND knit, in which case row 2 gives me 8 stitches…
I am so fed up with ripping this out – please explain???
Thank you!

Hi,
I am knitting your hat with earflaps, large infant size. I have just finished adding the earflaps and am counting my stitches but something doesn’t add up. I was wondering if you could clarify. On the pattern, it says I should have 84 stitches on my needles, but if I do the math (and count my stitches) it should add up to 88. It’s 14 stitches cast on + 15 stitches for earflap 1 + another 30 stitches cast on + 15 stitches from earflap 2 + the last 14 stitches cast on (14+15+30+15+14= 88).
Thanks for helping me out with this. Can’t wait to finish the hat for my daughter!

In the first knit row of the hat, you’ll see that the instructions tell you to k2tog to close up the gaps on either side of the earflap. so that’s 2 flaps…one stitch on either side…a total decrease of four stitches.
Happy knitting! =)

Makes sense! Thanks so much for clarifying.

Hi, Julie. Is there any chance I can contact you directly about one of your patterns? I don’t see an e.mail address on your blog. Or can you e.mail me at jmjenab@gmail.com ? Thank you! 🙂

Hey Julie. I love, love your patterns. I particularly wanted to make the cabled earflap hat for a two-year-old girl, and a four-year-old girl. The instructions are for infant size. What do you suggest I do to make this pattern go to these bigger sizes? Many thanks for any help you can give and for being so generous with your talents.

Is the basic earflap hat for adults or children? I had chemo and I do like the cap for the upcoming cold winter.

I have just found this site and love it. I wonder why the archives end in Dec of 08…. I continue to try to learn how to knit just a little better with each project.

Hi Julie, I am making the Lace-Edged Women’s Hat. When you finish the 6th decrease it says to continue in this pattern, decreasing every row. Does that mean to repeat the 6th decrease every row or keep going down like the 1st-5th decrease does? (do I do this every row K7(8,9) K2tog until 12 stitches remain? OR do I continue the decreasing pattern like K6 (7,8) K2tog; then K5 (6,7) K2tog?) Thanks!
