It’s been all earflap hats, all the time over here lately. I bought a bunch of bulky merino from handpaintedyarn.com because I heard a rumor that they weren’t going to be carrying it any more. The only way I could think to justify the yarn purchase was to make a bunch of hats and sell them. This is my absolute fave earflap hat yarn, folks! It’s spectacular and I hope the rumors aren’t true.
I was toying with doing a craft show this fall, but then decided to first put the hats in my etsy shop to see if they would sell there. So if you reached the blog searching for earflap hats but you’re not a knitter…you’re in luck! I’ve got a bunch of them! Head on over to the shop and take a look.
And if you’re a knitter, of course, the patterns are free, check the sidebar. I love that so many people have found them useful.

I made your original earflap hat a couple of years ago for my nephew. In fact I made two of them then sewed one inside of the other for extra warmth. I plan on making two more for this Christmas in rainbow stripes, with some fair isle on one. But I like the modification on this one! Is that a seed stitch? And I used worsted weight Cascade 220 for mine.

Yes, it is….I knit the flaps in seed stitch and did a few rows of seed stitch before switching to stockinette for the body of the hat. I really like the way it turned out! I haven’t had a real problem with curling because I always use 100% wool and steam block them…but if you were using a blend or all synthetic, I would think it would really help it not to curl.

Do you have a pattern in the new knitting day by day calendar??? We have them at Costco – and I need to know if I should be bragging about you to the members.

I love making hats – they knit up so quickly and have received numerous requests from family for an earflap hat! I need to jump on the earflap bandwagon and I love the seedstitch on the latest one you put up. I also have started looking into spinning, but I have only really taken up knitting (after learning the knit stitch in high school at church over 8 years ago) in the past 4 or 5 months. I’m addicted – so carry on to a fellow obsessive fiber lover!

Hi. Love the earflap hats! Have you posted the pattern for this version with the seed stitching? I want to try it with the new organic cotton yarn from KnitPicks for a friend’s soon-to-be-born twin boys. Thanks!

Julie: Love the baby/kids earflap hat, and attempted to knit one for afghans for Afghans. Ran into a problem though, in that when down to 35 stitches, how do I count down on the decreases? I think putting the stitches onto dps from circ — my row count is hard to keep track of.?. I’m rather new to knitting (although I’ve knitted several pair of mittens for afA). Can you explain how the stitches should be placed onto my dps, and how the count should proceed? ie. k8 k2tog k8 k2tog k8 k2tog k5 — what would be next.?. Thanks so much!!

Julie, Disregard my confusion… I read back on the entries, and found clear instructions on the correct count for the decreases
Completed the infant hat, and it’s adoreable!!! Anxious to make more for afghans for Afghans!
I love this seed stitch one… Would love to use this pattern for the infants cap — do you still kfb with the seed stitch? How would I go about making the seed stitch earflaps?

Julie, I love this pattern with the seed stitches but don’t see it listed on your side bar. Is it still available? Thanks, too, for the good You Tube video of how to do the plain ear flaps and how to add them to the cast on. Seeing it done is so much better than trying to read about it!
